Random thoughts on Deranged

derangedTo define in one phrase: B list overachiever

On the plot: it’s a quite credible catastrophe movie with unpredictable outcome regarding characters’ chance of survival. A self-explanatory blockbuster it may be but with Korean movies one shouldn’t expect the soppy Hollywoodish happy end. On most cases a simple “alive” qualifies for “happy”, who cares if he’s missing a leg or a wife. The main merit of Deranged is being true to its nature. The movie doesn’t pretend to be something more than it really is — a spine-chilling fun with a bit of family values that aren’t shoved down the throat. The huge bonus is absence of pseudo-philosophical dialogues before the final battle.

On the cast: Although, such movies aren’t judged for outstanding acting performance, I should note the actors fulfilled their purposes nicely, and Moon Jung-Hee deserves every bit of the awards she’s received.

On the cinematography: that’s one eye-popping level of nastiness, a truly dazzling work of make-up artists and CGE designers. The…things look really believable. The scene in the toilet showing in detail “the other exit” will be forever imprinted in my mind. The honorary mention goes to whoever made Kim Dongwan finally look his age and not ten years older as he usually does — to reach such unimaginable heights is no joke.

On the watching: no sex and practically no violence (in traditional sense of the word), but I would recommend to keep it away from kids since the nature of epidemic is extremely disturbing and scenes of deaths are pretty graphic and disgusting. Mindless action movie of good quality for a gloomy autumn day.
